Ottoman bazaars & the Old Bridge Best season (general guide): May–Jun, Sep–Oct

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountainous country where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav history meet. This route spends three nights in Sarajevo and three in Mostar. From Warsaw you'll fly to Sarajevo, directly or via a European hub.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Sarajevo: day one, Baščaršija; day two, Latin Bridge and the old town; day three, Tunnel Museum. Then spend days four to six in Mostar: day four, train along the Neretva to Mostar; day five, Old Bridge and the bazaar; day six, Blagaj and Kravica Waterfall.

Sarajevo's old bazaar, Baščaršija, is full of copper workshops, mosques and cafés serving Bosnian coffee. Ćevapi, small grilled sausages served in flatbread, are the local favourite.

The Latin Bridge is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that led to the First World War. The Tunnel Museum, near the airport, shows part of the tunnel that kept the city supplied during the siege of the 1990s.

A scenic train runs south along the Neretva river through mountains to Mostar. Its Old Bridge, Stari Most, arches high over the green river. It was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt, reopening in 2004, and UNESCO lists the area. Divers sometimes jump from it into the river.

Near Mostar, Blagaj has a dervish house, or tekke, at the foot of a cliff where the Buna river springs from a cave. Kravica Waterfall, further south, cascades into a pool where you can swim in summer.

May to June and September to October are the best seasons. Mostar is very hot in midsummer.

In Sarajevo, sit for a Bosnian coffee in Baščaršija and take your time; it is part of the ritual.

Good to know: The train is scenic, and buses also link the towns.

Canada advises a high degree of caution because of crime and unmarked landmines in rural and mountain areas (advisory updated 26 May 2026), so stay on paved roads and marked paths.

Mostar's old town is busy with day-trippers at midday, so explore it early or in the evening.
