Cape, wine & whales Best season (general guide): Aug–Nov (whales Jun–Nov)

The south-western tip of Africa packs a mountain city, a winelands region and one of the best places in the world for watching whales from land into a single, easy road trip. From Zurich you'll usually connect through a European or Gulf hub to Cape Town. After that, every stop is within a couple of hours' drive. The itinerary spends four nights in Cape Town, two nights in Stellenbosch and two nights in Hermanus.

How to pace it: After the connecting flights from Zurich, plan days one to four in Cape Town: first V&A Waterfront, then Table Mountain (weather permitting), Cape Peninsula: Boulders Beach and Cape Point, and finally Robben Island or Kirstenbosch. Next, plan days five and six in Stellenbosch: first travel to the winelands, then Stellenbosch village, and finally Franschhoek or Paarl estates. Next, plan days seven and eight in Hermanus: first travel to Walker Bay, then cliff path, and finally whale watching from shore or boat.

Cape Town comes first and deserves time. The cableway or a hike up Table Mountain gives views across the bay to Robben Island, and a day on the peninsula takes in the penguins at Boulders Beach, Chapman's Peak Drive and Cape Point. Inland, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are surrounded by vineyards, with Cape Dutch farmhouses, tastings and long lunches. The final stop is Hermanus on Walker Bay, where the cliff path along the shore is a free and often rewarding place to watch southern right whales during their annual visit.

The late-winter and spring months of August to November therefore suit this route best. The Western Cape has winter rain from roughly May to August, so earlier visits may bring wetter days in the city.

Driving is on the left, and having a car is the easiest way to move between the winelands and the coast.

Practical notes: Southern right whales usually arrive in Walker Bay from about June and stay until November, with September and October typically the best months. Book Robben Island ferries and the Table Mountain cableway in advance, as both depend on the weather and can close in strong wind.
