Bangkok to Britain: London, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye

Britain & Highlands Best season (general guide): May–Sep

This route travels from the capital to the Highlands, by train and road. It spends eight nights in the UK. From Bangkok you'll fly to London.

London's South Bank is a good first walk. The British Museum, Covent Garden and the Tower of London or the galleries fill the next days.

Take the train north to Edinburgh. The Royal Mile runs from the castle down to Holyrood, and Arthur's Seat, an old volcano, gives views over the city.

Drive through Glencoe to the Isle of Skye. On the Trotternish peninsula, the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing are famous walks. The Cuillin mountains rise above the island, and Portree is the main town. The Talisker distillery, on Loch Harport, offers tours.

May to September is the best season, according to VisitScotland. Midges are common in summer, so bring repellent.

Pacing: London is big, so group your sightseeing by area and use the Underground or buses between neighbourhoods rather than criss-crossing the city. Book timed tickets for the Tower ahead in summer.

The train from London to Edinburgh runs up the east coast in a few hours, a relaxing way to arrive. For Skye, a hire car gives the most freedom, but the island's single-track roads have passing places, and you should pull in to let others overtake. Accommodation on Skye fills up months ahead in summer, so book it first and build the rest of the trip around it.

Weather in the Highlands changes fast. Bring waterproof layers and proper walking shoes for the Storr and Quiraing paths, which can be muddy and exposed to the wind.

If you have an extra day, the Highland road between Edinburgh and Skye is worth breaking at Glencoe, where short trails lead into the glen. Portree's harbour, with its painted houses, is a good place for a slow last evening on the island.
