Where to spend your time in Porto
The riverside old quarter, part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre. Narrow lanes, colourful façades and the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge.
The city centre around Avenida dos Aliados. São Bento station, with its blue-and-white azulejo panels, is a short walk away.
Across the river from Ribeira. This is where the port wine lodges are, most offering cellar visits and tastings, plus a cable car along the waterfront.
Quieter riverside streets west of Ribeira. Historic tram line 1 runs along the river from here towards Foz.
Where the Douro meets the Atlantic: a seafront promenade, beaches and a slower pace than the centre.
Getting there
- By air: Porto Airport (OPO, Francisco Sá Carneiro). Metro line E (violet) runs from the airport to the city centre.
- From Lisbon by train: Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains run to Porto Campanhã; the Alfa Pendular takes about three hours.
Getting around
- Metro do Porto and STCP buses use the rechargeable Andante card.
- The centre is compact but steep: comfortable shoes beat any app.
