Levada hiking Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Madeira is a steep, green island in the Atlantic, and its levadas, old irrigation channels, are followed by walking paths across the mountains. This route spends six nights in Funchal, the capital. From Lisbon it's a short flight to the island.

Funchal's old town has painted doors and small restaurants, and the Mercado dos Lavradores sells fruit, flowers and fish. The Monte cable car climbs above the city, and Blandy's Wine Lodge offers tours and tastings of Madeira wine.

Spend a day walking a levada. Paths follow the channels along hillsides, through forest and past waterfalls. Some are flat and easy, and others have steep drops, so choose one that suits you. Another day, hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the island's highest peak, on a mountain path with tunnels and steps.

The north coast has cliffs and villages, and Porto Moniz has natural lava rock pools. A free day lets you rest or visit gardens.

Levadas can be walked all year, and April to October usually brings the most stable weather. Microclimates mean it can be sunny in Funchal and misty in the mountains, so check the forecast for each area.

Pacing: hiring a car gives the most freedom on Madeira, but the roads are steep and twisting, so allow time and drive carefully. Many levada walks are one-way, so you may need a taxi back to the start. Start early, before the clouds build over the mountains.

Bring a torch for the tunnels on some levada paths, and good walking shoes for the wet, uneven ground. Check the regional government's trail status before setting out, as paths can close after storms or rockfalls.

Funchal's waterfront promenade is good for an evening stroll, and the old town's restaurants serve espetada and fresh fish.
