Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the main gateway to the Riviera Maya. It is busy, its terminals are spread out, and the arrivals hall is known for persistent sales pitches. Knowing your transfer plan before landing helps.
Rough road times
- Cancún Hotel Zone: about 20–30 minutes.
- Downtown Cancún: about 20–30 minutes.
- Puerto Morelos: about 25–35 minutes.
- Playa del Carmen: about 45–60 minutes.
- Tulum: about 1.5–2 hours.
Times depend on traffic and roadworks.
Options
- Pre-booked private or shared transfer: a driver meets you at arrivals. This is the simplest choice with luggage, children or a late arrival. Check whether the price is per vehicle or per person, and what waiting time is included if your flight is delayed.
- ADO bus: buses run from the terminals to downtown Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is good value if your hotel is near a bus station.
- Airport taxis: licensed and available at the kerb, usually priced higher than pre-booked transfers.
- Car hire: useful if you plan to explore cenotes and ruins independently.
Tulum's own airport
Tulum International Airport (TQO), opened in late 2023, is much closer to Tulum and the southern Riviera Maya. Route choice is smaller than at Cancún, so compare both airports when you search flights: Search flights (partner).
Tips
- Arrivals halls have sales desks for timeshares and tours. If your transfer is booked, walk straight out to the meeting point listed in your confirmation.
- Save your driver's contact and the booking reference offline before you fly.
Terminals
Cancún airport has several terminals, used by different airlines and well separated. Check your arrival terminal on your booking and give it to your transfer company. When you fly out, check the departure terminal too, because it may not be the one you arrived at.
Choosing by destination
- Hotel Zone: short and simple. A shared shuttle or taxi works, and the bus is possible with light luggage.
- Playa del Carmen: the ADO bus to Playa's terminals is straightforward. A private transfer saves the walk or taxi from the bus station to your hotel.
- Tulum: a long ride. With children, many bags or a late arrival, a private transfer is usually worth considering. Also compare flights into Tulum's own airport.
- Isla Mujeres or Cozumel: transfer to the ferry terminals (Puerto Juárez or Playa del Carmen), then take the ferry. Check the last ferry times if you land late.
Shared vs private
Shared shuttles stop at several hotels, so the ride can take much longer than the direct drive time. Private transfers go straight to your hotel. For groups, compare the price per vehicle with buying several shuttle seats.
Safety and scams
- Only get into vehicles from your booked company, an official taxi rank or a licensed bus.
- Be wary of people in the terminal who say your transfer was cancelled, or offer to "help". Contact your company directly.
- Agree the destination and fare before leaving if you take an unbooked taxi.
Going back
Allow plenty of time for the return trip. Traffic on Highway 307 can be slow, and international check-in at busy terminals takes a while. Ask your hotel how far ahead other guests usually leave.
Arrival-day timing
Immigration and baggage at Cancún can take a while when several international flights land together. Most pre-booked transfer companies track your flight and wait for you, but check how long the free waiting time lasts. If you plan to stop at a supermarket on the way to Tulum or Playa del Carmen, ask in advance, because private transfers often allow a short stop and shared shuttles generally don't. For late arrivals, consider a first night near the airport or in Cancún's Hotel Zone rather than a long night drive.
Money on arrival
If you need pesos, use an ATM run by a bank rather than an exchange booth in the arrivals hall, and decline any offer to charge you in your home currency, since that conversion is usually worse. Keep some small notes for tips and snacks on a long drive south.
Checklist
- Save your transfer voucher and the driver's contact details offline.
- Note your terminal and the official meeting point.
- Check how long the free waiting time lasts if your flight is delayed.
- Ask in advance about stops, child seats and luggage limits.
- Compare Cancún (CUN) and Tulum (TQO) flights if you're staying in Tulum.
