Cuba heritage Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr

Cuba's three most visited regions show its cities, its countryside and its colonial past, and all three are listed by UNESCO. This route starts in Havana, goes west to Viñales and then south-east to Trinidad. From Stockholm you'll usually connect in Europe to Havana.

Old Havana's squares, churches and forts take a couple of days to explore, and an evening walk along the Malecón seafront is a good way to end the day. The drive west reaches Viñales, a valley of tobacco farms and limestone hills where the old methods of growing and drying tobacco are still used. Walks and horseback rides go out among the fields and caves. Trinidad, on the south coast, was built on the wealth of sugar, and its centre of cobbled streets and colonial mansions is beautifully preserved. The Valley of the Sugar Mills next to it has the ruins of old estates and a watchtower.

The dry season from about November to April is the best time to travel. Hurricane season runs from June to November. In September 2026, Canada advised against non-essential travel to Cuba due to severe shortages of fuel, electricity, food and medicine, with long power cuts that can disrupt transport and flights.

Read your government's advice before booking, and plan for limited internet and card use.

Pacing note: travel between the three stops by shared taxi or a pre-booked driver, and leave flexibility in your plans in case of fuel shortages.
