Jordan desert & Red Sea Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

Safety note: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Jordan due to the volatile regional security situation, and all travel within 5 km of the Iraq and Syria borders (updated 17 Sep 2026). The US rates Jordan Level 3 (reconsider travel), citing the threat of Iranian drone and missile attacks and flight disruptions since 28 Feb 2026 (issued 29 Aug 2026).

Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba are outside the do-not-travel areas.

Jordan runs from the hills around Amman down to the Red Sea, and this route follows it south in seven nights. From Paris you'll fly to Amman.

Start in the capital, with the Citadel on its hill and the Roman theatre below. A day trip north to Jerash reveals one of the best-preserved Roman towns in the region. Then take the road south to Wadi Musa, the town at the entrance to Petra.

At Petra, the Siq is a narrow gorge about 1.2 kilometres long that ends at the Treasury. Allow a full day to reach the Monastery, up hundreds of rock-cut steps. Further south, Wadi Rum is a desert of sandstone mountains, where Bedouin guides lead jeep trips and walks, and camps offer a night under the stars. The route ends in Aqaba, Jordan's Red Sea port, where the reefs are close to shore.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. The Jordan Pass waives the visa fee if you buy it before arrival and stay at least three nights. UNESCO lists Petra and Wadi Rum.

Pacing: start Petra as the gates open, and carry water and sun protection.

Jordanian food, from mezze to mansaf, is a highlight.
