Istanbul to Namibia: Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha

Namibia self-drive Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Namibia is best seen on a self-drive trip, with long empty roads and well-run lodges. This loop covers the dunes, the coast and Etosha in eight nights. From Istanbul you'll connect through Johannesburg or another hub to reach Windhoek.

Pick up a car in Windhoek, then drive to Sesriem, at the edge of the Namib. Wake early to drive into Sossusvlei, where red dunes surround the white clay pan of Deadvlei and its dead camel thorn trees. UNESCO lists the Namib Sand Sea.

The coast road leads north to Swakopmund, a German colonial town between the desert and the Atlantic. From Walvis Bay, kayak trips paddle among seals, and desert tours explore the dunes.

The final leg goes north to Etosha, a vast salt pan surrounded by bush. Waterholes near the camps are lit at night, and you can sit and watch animals come to drink. Self-drive game drives are easy on Etosha's gravel roads.

May to October is the dry season, when animals gather at waterholes. Distances are long, so drive in daylight and carry water.

Pacing: Namibia's gravel roads are good but demand care, so keep to a modest speed and avoid driving after dark, when animals cross the roads. Fill up with fuel whenever you can, as stations are far apart. Book park accommodation inside or near Etosha well ahead.

At Sossusvlei, the gates open at sunrise. Stay inside the park or close to Sesriem to be among the first in, and climb a dune before the sand gets too hot. Carry plenty of water, a hat and sun protection.

Windhoek itself is small and calm, and one night is enough to collect your car, shop for supplies and rest. Swakopmund, by contrast, rewards a slower pace, with seafront cafés and cool mornings that feel very different from the desert.
