Antarctic fly-cruise Best season (general guide): Dec–Feb

A fly-cruise skips the two-day crossing of the Drake Passage by flying over it instead, which suits travellers who are short of time or worried about seasickness. This route travels from Rome to Punta Arenas in southern Chile, usually via Madrid or another hub and Santiago. From there an expedition operator flies you to King George Island and the ship. The itinerary spends two nights in Punta Arenas.

Punta Arenas has a plaza with grand houses from its wool and shipping days and a long waterfront along the Strait of Magellan, and boat trips go out to penguin colonies on nearby islands in season. The flight to King George Island only goes ahead in suitable weather, so operators build waiting days into the schedule. Once aboard, the ship sails into the Peninsula's channels, and you land by inflatable boat at sites chosen for that day's ice and wildlife conditions. The return is usually by air as well.

Fly-cruises operate in the heart of the austral summer, mainly from about December to February. IAATO figures show that almost all Antarctic Peninsula tourism happens in the October to April window.
