Maldives reefs & manta rays Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr (most settled Jan–Mar)

From Kazakhstan's mountain-ringed former capital to an island barely above sea level: this route goes from snow peaks to coral reefs. It also keeps the Maldives approachable. Rather than a private resort island, it uses Maafushi, an inhabited local island where guesthouses opened after the country allowed tourism outside resorts.

Flights from Almaty to Malé usually connect in the Gulf or South Asia. Spending the first night in or around Malé, or on neighbouring Hulhumalé by the airport, means you don't have to rush onto a boat after a long journey. Maafushi is a short speedboat ride away, and public ferries also run. On the island, days revolve around the water: snorkelling trips to nearby reefs, sandbank picnics, and excursions that may meet turtles, rays or dolphins, depending on the operator and the conditions. Life on a local island follows Maldivian customs. Beaches set aside for visitors allow swimwear, and alcohol isn't served on the inhabited islands themselves.

The Maldives Meteorological Service describes January to March as the heart of the northeast monsoon, the most settled period. December and April are transition months, and from about May the southwest monsoon brings more rain and wind. Reef trips run most of the year, but some days may be cancelled when the sea is rough.

Maafushi suits travellers who would rather spend their time in the water than in a resort villa, and it gives a glimpse of everyday island life: the mosque, the school, fishing boats coming in at dusk. If you want a taste of resort life as well, many guesthouses can arrange day passes to nearby resort islands, which have their own rules on dress and drinks. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a light cover-up for walking around the village.
