Fortified port & leopard country Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr

Sri Lanka's south coast has a historic fort town and one of the best places in Asia to see leopards. This route spends three nights in Galle and three near Yala. From Amsterdam you'll connect via the Gulf to Colombo. Galle's old town and fortifications, built by the Portuguese and Dutch, are listed by UNESCO.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Galle: day one, road from Colombo; day two, fort walls at sunset; day three, Unawatuna beach. Then spend days four to six in Yala: day four, drive east to Yala; day five, morning safari; day six, second safari.

Walking the ramparts at sunset is a local tradition, with views of the lighthouse and the sea. Inside the walls are churches, old houses, cafés and shops. Along the coast, stilt fishermen balance on poles above the waves. Unawatuna, nearby, is a beach with calm water. Yala National Park, to the east, has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere, along with elephants, crocodiles and birds.

December to April is the best time on the south coast.

Good to know: The drive from Galle to Yala takes several hours. Safaris start early; some sections of Yala close for a period in the dry season.

In Galle, stay inside the fort walls for the atmosphere, or on the beach nearby for swimming. Tuk-tuks are the easiest way to get around the coast. Safari jeeps can be booked through your accommodation near Yala, and early mornings give the best chance of seeing leopards. Bring binoculars, a hat and sun protection, and keep valuables close in busy places.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka because of demonstrations, the threat of terrorism and crime (advisory updated 7 Jul 2026). The US rates Sri Lanka Level 2 (issued 14 Oct 2025).

Between safaris, the lodges near the park are a good place to rest in the heat of the day, with birdwatching around the grounds and early nights before the next dawn start.
