Amsterdam to Langkawi
Amsterdam → Langkawi
Rainforest, a cable car & island hopping Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr
Langkawi, an archipelago of about 99 islands off Malaysia's north-west coast, combines rainforest hills, mangrove rivers and easy beaches. This route spends six nights on the main island. From Amsterdam you'll connect via Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi.
How to pace it: base yourself near Pantai Cenang, the main beach strip, and give each day one outing. Ride the cable car on day two, take a boat into the mangroves on day three, walk up to the Seven Wells on day four, go island hopping on day five and keep the last full day for the beach. Leave the late afternoons free for the sunset from Pantai Cenang.
The landscape is the reason to come. Langkawi became the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Southeast Asia in 2007, for its ancient rocks, limestone towers and sea caves. The Langkawi Cable Car rises to near the top of Gunung Mat Cincang, where the Sky Bridge, a curved pedestrian bridge about 125 metres long, hangs over the forest. In the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, boats wind through mangroves between limestone cliffs where eagles are often seen, and the Telaga Tujuh, or Seven Wells, is a chain of pools and waterfalls on the mountainside.
Stories and towns: the island's best-known legend is that of Mahsuri, a princess wrongly put to death who cursed Langkawi for seven generations, and her tomb is a well-known site. Kuah, the largest town, is where ferries arrive from the mainland and Penang; it has no proper beach, and its evenings centre on seafood restaurants.
Practical notes: November to April is the drier season. Langkawi has been a duty-free island since 1987. Malaysia drives on the left, which matters if you hire a car or scooter between the beaches and the sights. Every two years the island hosts the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, so check the dates if you want a quiet stay.
Safety: Canada asks travellers to Malaysia to take normal security precautions, with regional advisories for eastern Sabah, which is far from Langkawi (updated 9 Oct 2026). The US rates Malaysia Level 1 (22 Feb 2026).
