Temples & volcano sunrise Best season (general guide): Apr–Oct

Java is Indonesia's most populous island, with great temples and active volcanoes. This route spends three nights in Yogyakarta and two at Mount Bromo. From Amsterdam you'll connect through Jakarta or another hub.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Yogyakarta: day one, the Kraton; day two, Borobudur at dawn; day three, Prambanan. Then spend days four and five at Mount Bromo: day four, train east, road up to Bromo; day five, sunrise viewpoint and the crater.

Yogyakarta is a centre of Javanese culture. The Kraton, the sultan's palace, is still in use, and craftsmen sell batik and silver in the streets around it.

Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a Hindu temple complex, are both listed by UNESCO. Climbing Borobudur's upper terraces is restricted and may require a special ticket; check current rules.

A train runs east across Java, and a road climbs to the Tengger caldera. At dawn, visitors watch the sun rise over Mount Bromo and the sea of sand. The Tengger people live in the villages around the volcano.

On Java, April to October is the dry season and the best time to go.

Yogyakarta's Malioboro Street is busy with shops and food stalls, and the city is known for gudeg, a dish of young jackfruit cooked in coconut milk. Traditional performances, such as the Ramayana ballet, are staged near Prambanan on some evenings. Around Bromo, the villages are farming communities, and the slopes are terraced with vegetables. Jeeps take visitors across the sea of sand to the foot of the crater, where steps lead to the rim.

Good to know: The Bromo sunrise means a very early start, and it is cold at the viewpoint, so bring warm layers. Check volcanic alert levels before you go.

Dress modestly at the palace and temples, and carry a scarf against the dust on the jeep ride. Hire a licensed guide at Borobudur if you want to hear the stories carved on its reliefs.
