Auckland to Kauaʻi: the Garden Isle

Auckland → Kauaʻi (north shore) → Kauaʻi (south shore)

Kauaʻi, the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands, is green, steep and less developed than its neighbours. This route spends three nights on the north shore and three on the south. From Auckland you'll fly to Honolulu, then connect to Līhuʻe.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kauaʻi (north shore): day one, Hanalei; day two, Kalalau Trail section; day three, Nā Pali by boat. Then spend days four to six in Kauaʻi (south shore): day four, drive to Poʻipū; day five, Waimea Canyon; day six, Spouting Horn and beaches.

Kauaʻi is called the Garden Isle for its rainforest and flowers.

The Nā Pali coast, on the north-west, has cliffs that fall straight into the sea. The Kalalau Trail runs along part of it, and boat trips show the cliffs from the water.

Hanalei, on the north shore, is a small town on a wide bay with taro fields behind it.

Waimea Canyon, in the west, is a deep red canyon with viewpoints along the road. On the south shore, Poʻipū has sunny beaches, and Spouting Horn is a blowhole in the lava rocks.

April to October is usually drier.

Good to know: A car is needed. Permits and reservations apply to Hāʻena State Park and the Kalalau Trail, so book ahead.

Hanalei Bay is good for swimming in calm summer months, but winter brings large surf. Waimea Canyon has short trails to viewpoints, and Kōkeʻe State Park beyond has longer hikes. The south shore is sunnier, and monk seals sometimes rest on the beaches; keep your distance. Local food includes poke, plate lunches and shave ice. Roads are slow and one-lane bridges are common on the north shore.

Respect the ocean: currents can be strong, so swim at beaches with lifeguards.

Practical notes: The north shore is green and rainy, with taro fields and quiet beaches. Boat trips along the Nā Pali coast often see dolphins, and sea caves can be entered in calm weather. Rental cars sell out in busy periods, so book early.
