Bangkok to Queensland: Hervey Bay and K'gari
Bangkok → Hervey Bay → K'gari
Humpback whales & the world's largest sand island Best season (general guide): Jul–Oct
On Queensland's coast, Hervey Bay is one of the world's best places to watch humpback whales, and just across the strait lies K'gari, the largest sand island on Earth. This route spends three nights in Hervey Bay and three on the island. From Bangkok you'll connect via Brisbane or Sydney to Hervey Bay.
How to pace it: put the whale-watching cruise on your first full day, while you are still on the mainland, and keep a spare day in Hervey Bay in case wind cancels a trip. Then take the ferry to K'gari for Lake McKenzie and a day on the eastern beach, and return by ferry on the last morning.
Hervey Bay: humpback whales rest in its sheltered waters on their migration, and in 2019 it became the first place in the world to be named a Whale Heritage Site. The Urangan Pier, nearly a kilometre long, was built in the early twentieth century to load sugar and coal.
K'gari: the island is about 120 kilometres long and was added to the UNESCO list in 1992; its official name changed back from Fraser Island to K'gari in 2023, and the Butchulla people are its traditional owners. Lake McKenzie is a freshwater lake with white sand, Lake Wabby is slowly being filled by a moving dune, and rainforest grows on the sand inland. Seventy-Five Mile Beach serves as a highway for four-wheel-drive vehicles, and the rusting wreck of the SS Maheno has lain there since a cyclone in 1935.
Practical notes: July to October is whale season. The island's dingoes are considered among the purest strains in eastern Australia, and up to 500,000 people visit K'gari each year, so book ferries and island stays ahead in the whale months.
Safety: Canada asks travellers to Australia to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Australia Level 1 (18 Aug 2026).
