Bangkok to Vietnam's largest island: Phú Quốc
Bangkok → Phú Quốc
Beaches, fish-sauce houses and a long cable car Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr
Phú Quốc, in the Gulf of Thailand off Vietnam's southern coast, has long beaches, forest hills and a strong local food tradition. This route spends six nights on the island. From Bangkok you'll fly to Phú Quốc, often with a connection in Ho Chi Minh City.
How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Phú Quốc: day one, Dương Đông town; day two, fish-sauce factory and the night market; day three, cable car to Hòn Thơm; day four, boat around the An Thới islands; day five, national park forest; day six, beach day.
The island is famous for its fish sauce, made from anchovies fermented in large wooden barrels, and some factories can be visited. The An Thới archipelago, off the southern tip, is a group of small islands visited by boat for swimming and snorkelling.
Phú Quốc National Park covers much of the north of the island with forest. Phu Quoc Prison, where prisoners were held during the Vietnam War, is now a museum. The dry season, from November to April, is the best time for the beaches; the monsoon brings rain and rougher seas from May. Seafood is grilled at the night market in Dương Đông, the main town.
The island lies closer to Cambodia than to the Vietnamese mainland. Sao Beach, on the south-east coast, is known for its white sand. Ho Quoc Pagoda, a modern Buddhist temple, stands on a hill above the east coast. Phú Quốc lies in the Gulf of Thailand. The Phú Quốc Prison was built by the French to hold captured Viet Minh fighters, and it was later used during the Vietnam War.
Phú Quốc International Airport links the island with mainland Vietnam and with international destinations. Black pepper is grown on the island, and pepper farms welcome visitors.
Safety: Canada's advice for Vietnam is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 22 Jun 2026), and the US rates Vietnam Level 1 (24 Jun 2026).
