A hanok village & bamboo forests Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov

Korea's south-west is the country's food heartland, with a well-kept traditional quarter in Jeonju and bamboo forests in Damyang. This route spends four nights in Jeonju and two in Damyang. From Berlin you'll fly to Seoul, then take the KTX train south.

How to pace it: arrive and settle into a hanok guesthouse, then give one day to the Hanok Village, one to the Gyeonggijeon shrine and the cathedral, and one to the markets. Take the bus via Gwangju to Damyang on day five and walk the bamboo garden and Soswaewon on day six, before heading back to Seoul.

Jeonju is the capital and largest city of Jeonbuk province and the ancestral home of the Joseon dynasty's royal family, the Yi clan. Its Hanok Village has hundreds of traditional tiled houses, many now guesthouses, cafés and craft shops; the Gyeonggijeon shrine holds a portrait of the dynasty's founder, King Taejo, and Jeondong Cathedral stands where Korean Catholics were martyred in the eighteenth century.

Food and crafts: Jeonju joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for gastronomy in May 2012 and is famous for bibimbap. Makgeolli, a cloudy rice wine, comes with plates of side dishes in its taverns, and the city is also known for hanji, paper made from mulberry bark. Pansori, storytelling through song, has deep roots in the Jeolla region and is listed by UNESCO.

Damyang, near Gwangju, is known for bamboo. Juknokwon covers a hillside with walking trails among tall bamboo, the county has an avenue of metasequoia trees, and Soswaewon is a classical Joseon garden built around a stream.

Practical notes: spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summers are hot and wet. The Jeonju International Film Festival is held each spring, so book rooms early if your dates overlap.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to South Korea to take normal security precautions (updated 21 Aug 2026), and the US rates South Korea Level 1 (28 May 2025).
