Rainforest, hot springs & the Boiling Lake Best season (general guide): Feb–May

Dominica is a mountainous Caribbean island known for rainforest, rivers and volcanic features. This route spends six nights on the island. From Bogotá you'll connect via a Caribbean hub to Dominica. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is listed by UNESCO for its volcanic landscapes and forest. The Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole, is reached on a hard day hike.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Dominica: day one, Roseau; day two, Trafalgar Falls; day three, Boiling Lake hike; day four, snorkelling off the west coast; day five, Kalinago Territory; day six, hot springs.

Trafalgar Falls are twin waterfalls near Roseau, the capital. The calm west coast has snorkelling over reefs close to shore. The Kalinago Territory is home to the island's Indigenous Kalinago people.

Good to know: Roads are winding, so allow time.

Dominica's airport is on the east coast, a long, winding drive from Roseau, so arrange a transfer before you arrive. Roads are steep and narrow, and driving is on the left. Hiring a driver or guide for day trips makes the island easier to explore. The Boiling Lake hike is long and demanding, with steep, muddy sections, so go with a certified guide. A site pass is needed for many of the nature sites. Hot springs are found in several villages, and some lodges have their own pools. Accommodation is mostly in small eco-lodges and guesthouses.

The Waitukubuli National Trail crosses the island in sections. Rivers and waterfalls are the main swimming spots, with clear pools in the forest. Wear water shoes on slippery rocks. Don't swim after heavy rain, when rivers can rise quickly. Bring insect repellent for evenings. Morne Diablotins, the island's highest mountain and largest volcano, reaches 1,447 metres, and the climb to its summit takes about three hours.

Practical notes: February to May is the dry season. A local permit is needed to drive. The island is wet, so bring waterproofs and quick-drying clothes. Pack light layers, a dry bag for phones and cameras, and good walking sandals for river crossings.

Safety: Canada's advice for Dominica is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Dominica Level 1 (20 May 2026).
