Island churches in a fjord-like bay & a walled seaside town Best season (general guide): May–Jun, Sep

Montenegro's coast is short, but its two faces are very different: the deep, mountain-ringed Bay of Kotor and the open beaches around Budva. This route spends three nights in Perast and three in Budva. From Bogotá you'll connect through a European hub to Tivat, the airport between the two. Perast is a small town a few kilometres north-west of Kotor, best known for the two islets just offshore, St George and Our Lady of the Rocks.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Perast: day one, the waterfront at dusk; day two, boat to Our Lady of the Rocks; day three, Kotor's old town by bus. Then spend days four to six in Budva: day four, road to Budva, then the walled town; day five, beaches of the riviera; day six, Sveti Stefan viewpoint.

Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island. Local tradition says sailors built it up over centuries by dropping rocks and sinking old ships around a reef, and boats take visitors out to its church. The bay, often compared to a fjord, is part of the UNESCO-listed natural and cultural region of Kotor. Its well-preserved walled old town sits on a small headland.

The coast around it, called the Budva Riviera, is the centre of Montenegro's tourism, with sandy beaches and a busy nightlife. Further south along the riviera, Sveti Stefan is a tiny island village joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land and now run as a hotel. Late spring and September are warm without the peak of summer.

Kotor, a short bus ride from Perast, has a walled old town below steep fortifications that climb the mountain behind it. The Bay of Kotor is ringed by mountains that rise steeply from the water, and the road around it passes small towns and churches.

Safety: Canada's advice for Montenegro is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Montenegro Level 1 (27 Aug 2026).
