Buenos Aires to Ceará: Jericoacoara
Buenos Aires → Jericoacoara
Dunes, lagoons and wind on Brazil's north coast Best season (general guide): Jul–Jan
On the coast of Ceará, in Brazil's far north-east, the village of Jericoacoara sits among dunes and freshwater lagoons with a steady wind for much of the year. This route spends six nights there. From Buenos Aires you'll connect through São Paulo to Jericoacoara airport. Jericoacoara is known for its beach of the same name and its national park.
How to pace it: Spend days one to six in Jericoacoara: day one, sunset dune; day two, walk to Pedra Furada; day three, Lagoa do Paraíso; day four, kitesurf or windsurf lesson; day five, buggy along the dunes; day six, rest day in the village.
Walk along the beach at low tide to Pedra Furada, a rock arch on the shore. Lagoa do Paraíso, a freshwater lagoon near Jijoca, has hammocks strung in the shallow water.
Brazil's north-east coast is one of the world's best-known kitesurfing areas, with strong, steady trade winds in the second half of the year. In the evenings, the big dune west of the village fills with people watching the sunset. Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that mixes dance and music, is often performed on the beach.
Practical notes: the windy season, from about July to January, is also the drier part of the year, as the climate table for nearby Fortaleza shows, so book lessons and buggy trips ahead then. Jericoacoara means place of the turtles in the Tupi language, according to one explanation. Take a buggy west to Tatajuba, a village of dunes and lagoons.
The Washington Post once named it among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. The beach lies behind the dunes on the west coast of the municipality of Jijoca de Jericoacoara.
Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Brazil because of crime (advisory updated 5 Oct 2026), and the US rates Brazil Level 2 (31 Aug 2026).
