Maritime towns & the Cabot Trail Best season (general guide): Jun–Oct

Nova Scotia is a peninsula on Canada's Atlantic coast, with fishing villages, lighthouses and a strong Scottish heritage on Cape Breton Island. This route goes from Halifax along the South Shore to Lunenburg and then north to the Cabot Trail. From Cairo you'll connect through Europe or Toronto.

Halifax has a long waterfront boardwalk with seafood stalls. The Citadel, a star-shaped fort on the hill, overlooks the city. Pier 21, where many immigrants first arrived in Canada, is now a national museum.

The coast road passes Peggy's Cove, a fishing village on bare granite with a lighthouse. Lunenburg, further on, is a harbour town of brightly painted wooden houses laid out on a British colonial grid, and UNESCO lists it. The schooner Bluenose II is based here, and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic tells the town's story.

Cape Breton Island is reached by a causeway. The Cabot Trail loops around its northern tip, through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with ocean views from the cliffs. The Skyline Trail is a popular walk to a headland, and whale-watching boats leave from harbours along the coast. Celtic music is part of the island's culture.

June to October is the best season, with autumn colours on the Cabot Trail in early autumn.

Lobster suppers and seafood chowder are common on menus along the coast. On Cape Breton, small towns host ceilidhs, evenings of Celtic music and dancing, especially in summer and early autumn.

Pacing: a hire car is essential. Drive the Cabot Trail clockwise for the best views and allow a full day. Book accommodation ahead in the autumn colour season.
