Chicago to Quebec: Montreal and Mont-Tremblant
Chicago → Montreal → Mont-Tremblant
French-Canadian city life & Laurentian lakes Best season (general guide): Jun–Oct
Montreal and the Laurentian mountains show two sides of Quebec: the largest French-speaking city in the Americas, and a wild, lake-filled national park. This route spends four nights in Montreal and two at Mont-Tremblant, about two hours north by road. From Chicago you'll fly to Montreal.
How to pace it: arrive and wander Old Montreal's cobbled streets and stone buildings by the St Lawrence; the city was founded there as Ville-Marie in 1642. Day two is for the Notre-Dame Basilica, known for its deep blue and gold interior, and the Old Port. On day three, walk up Mount Royal, the park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, and visit Saint Joseph's Oratory, the largest church in Canada. Give day four to food: the Jean-Talon Market, one of the largest open-air markets in North America, and Montreal-style bagels, boiled in honey water and baked in wood-fired ovens. Finish with poutine, fries with cheese curds and gravy. Montreal hosted Expo 67 and the 1976 Summer Olympics, whose stadium has one of the tallest inclined towers in the world.
On day five, drive to Mont-Tremblant, a resort village under the highest peak of the Laurentians. Mont Tremblant National Park, created in 1895 as Quebec's first national park, fills day six with lakes, rivers and trails, and canoeing in summer.
Practical notes: June to October is the season, and autumn colours peak in late September and early October, the busiest time in the mountains. Summer is festival season in Montreal, with the International Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs, so book rooms early. On a rainy day, the Underground City, or RÉSO, links many downtown buildings, and the Biodôme, in the former Olympic velodrome, lets you walk through replicas of five ecosystems of the Americas.
Safety: the US rates Canada Level 1 (5 Jun 2026); for Canadians this is a domestic trip.
