Black-sand beaches & lagoon islands Best season (general guide): May–Oct

French Polynesia's best-known islands are mountain peaks rising from turquoise lagoons, and this route pairs the busy main island, Tahiti, with quieter Moorea next door. It spends three nights on each. From Delhi you'll connect via a hub to Papeete, the capital, on Tahiti.

How to pace it: on arrival day, walk Papeete's market, which sells fruit, fish and flowers, and try poisson cru, raw fish in coconut milk and the national dish. Give day two to Tahiti's black-sand beaches and Point Venus on the north coast, where Captain James Cook observed the transit of Venus in 1769. On day three, drive to the south coast and Teahupo'o, whose famous reef wave hosted the Olympic surfing in 2024. Then take the ferry to Moorea, 17 kilometres to the north-west.

On Moorea, jagged peaks rise around Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. Spend one day inland: the road up the Opunohu valley passes the remains of marae, traditional Polynesian sacred sites, and ends at the Belvedere lookout over both bays. Keep the last full day for the lagoon, where boat trips stop at sandbanks for a swim.

Practical notes: May to October is the dry season. The currency is the CFP franc, as French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France, spread over 118 islands and atolls. Tahitian black pearls, farmed in the lagoons of the outer islands, are the classic thing to buy, and if you see outrigger canoes out on the water, that is va'a, the national sport. Tahiti itself is made up of two volcanic parts, Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti, joined by a narrow isthmus, and Mount Orohena is the highest point in French Polynesia.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to French Polynesia to take normal security precautions (updated 16 Jun 2026), and the US rates it Level 1 (2 Dec 2024).
