Germany's south-west corner, near France and Switzerland, combines a lively university city with the hills that gave the Black Forest gateau its name. This route spends three nights in Freiburg and three in the Black Forest. From Doha you'll connect to the EuroAirport at Basel-Mulhouse, close to Freiburg. Freiburg lies at the south-western foot of the Black Forest on the Dreisam river and is the fourth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Freiburg: day one, tram into the old town; day two, minster and the market; day three, Schauinsland cable car. Then spend days four to six in the Black Forest: day four, train into the hills; day five, Triberg falls; day six, Feldberg walk.

Freiburg's Gothic minster towers over the market square, and narrow water channels called Bächle run through the old town streets. The Vauban district, built on a former military base, is often cited as a model of sustainable urban living. The Black Forest is a large wooded mountain range about 160 kilometres long, bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south. It is the source of the Danube and the Neckar.

The Feldberg, at around 1,490 metres, is its highest peak. The Triberg Waterfalls are among the highest in Germany, and the town is also known for its cuckoo clocks, a craft of the region. The hills are best from late spring to mid-autumn. Freiburg is Germany's southernmost city with a population over 100,000.

The Schauinsland cable car climbs a mountain just outside the city. The Black Forest covers an area of about 6,000 square kilometres in Baden-Württemberg. Titisee, a lake in the southern Black Forest, is a popular summer resort. The Black Forest Railway, built in the nineteenth century, winds through tunnels on its route over the hills. The Black Forest gateau, a cherry and cream cake laced with kirsch, takes its name from the region's cherry brandy.
