A diamond-rush town & table mountains, caves and waterfalls Best season (general guide): Apr–Oct

In the interior of Bahia, the Chapada Diamantina rises in table mountains above the dry plains, with rivers, caves and some of Brazil's highest waterfalls. This route spends two nights in Lençóis and four in the Chapada. From Doha you'll connect through São Paulo or Salvador to Lençóis. Lençóis is a municipality in Bahia with about 11,500 people.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Lençóis: day one, the old town; day two, river pools and the Serrano. Then spend days three to six in Chapada Diamantina: day three, Morro do Pai Inácio at sunset; day four, hike to the Fumaça falls; day five, Poço Encantado cave; day six, Vale do Pati.

The town has a well-preserved colonial atmosphere and is the starting point for treks into the Chapada Diamantina. The region grew in the nineteenth century after diamonds were discovered, which gave it its name. The Chapada Diamantina National Park protects rugged terrain covered mainly by plants of the Caatinga biome. The Cachoeira da Fumaça, or Smoke Falls, drops from the edge of a plateau and is one of the highest waterfalls in Brazil.

Morro do Pai Inácio, a flat-topped hill, is a popular place to watch the sunset over the table mountains. At the Poço Encantado, sunlight enters a cave and lights up a pool of clear blue water. The Vale do Pati, a remote valley, is crossed on multi-day treks with local guides. The drier season, from about April to October, is the best for hiking.

The Chapada Diamantina region lies in the centre of the state of Bahia. The Marimbus wetland, near Lençóis, is explored by canoe. Gruta da Lapa Doce is a large limestone cave with formations along its passages. The Morro do Pai Inácio, a flat-topped hill 1,120 metres high, stands in the park near Palmeiras.

The park's terrain is rugged and mostly covered by the plants of the Caatinga.
