An original castle on a lagoon & one of Japan's oldest shrines Best season (general guide): Apr–May, Oct–Nov

Japan's San'in coast, on the Sea of Japan, is quiet and old-fashioned, with one of the country's surviving original castles and one of its holiest shrines. This route spends three nights in Matsue and three in Izumo. From Dubai you'll connect through Tokyo to Izumo airport, which lies between the two. Matsue is the capital of Shimane Prefecture, in the Chūgoku region of Honshu. Its castle from the Tokugawa era is one of the last surviving feudal castles in Japan.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Matsue: day one, the castle and the moat; day two, Lafcadio Hearn's house and Lake Shinji sunset; day three, Adachi Museum gardens. Then spend days four to six in Izumo: day four, train to Izumo, then the shrine; day five, Hinomisaki coast; day six, Iwami Ginzan silver mine.

The castle keep was named a National Treasure in 2015, and boats tour the moats around it. The writer Lafcadio Hearn lived in Matsue in 1890 and 1891 and wrote about Japanese life and ghost stories. His former house and a museum can be visited. The Adachi Museum of Art, outside the city, is famous for its gardens, which are viewed through the museum windows like paintings.

Izumo-taisha, in the city of Izumo, is one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. According to tradition, the gods of Japan gather there each year in the tenth month of the old calendar, which in Izumo is called the month with gods. Iwami Ginzan, a former silver mine further along the coast, is listed by UNESCO for its mining landscape and old town.

Izumo soba, buckwheat noodles served in stacked round dishes, is the local speciality. Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather. The main hall of Izumo-taisha is a National Treasure, and its huge sacred straw rope hangs over the entrance of the kagura hall. Local trains and the small Ichibata railway link Matsue and Izumo.

Safety: Canada's advice for Japan is to take normal security precautions (updated 29 Sep 2026), and the US rates Japan Level 1 (15 May 2025).
