Alaska wilderness Best season (general guide): Jun–Aug (season mid-May–mid-Sep)

Alaska's summer is short but intense, with long daylight hours to explore glaciers, fjords and the tundra around Denali. This route starts in Anchorage, goes south to the coast at Seward and then north into Denali National Park. From Hong Kong you'll connect, usually through a North American or Asian hub, to Anchorage. The itinerary spends two nights in Anchorage, two nights in Seward (Kenai Fjords) and three nights in Denali.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Anchorage: day one, coastal trail; day two, Alaska Native Heritage Center. Then spend days three and four in Seward (Kenai Fjords): day three, along Turnagain Arm to Seward; day four, Kenai Fjords day cruise. Then spend days five to seven in Denali: day five, travel north to Denali; day six, park bus into the park; day seven, tundra walk, then visitor centre.

Anchorage is a practical base for stocking up and getting oriented. The road and the railway south along Turnagain Arm to Seward are scenic in their own right. From Seward's harbour, day cruises enter Kenai Fjords National Park, where glaciers flow down to the sea and you may see sea otters, sea lions, puffins and whales. From there, the route heads north to Denali, a park of more than six million acres. The single park road is mainly served by buses; a landslide at Pretty Rocks has shortened the bus route in recent seasons, so check the NPS page for how far buses go. Hiking off-trail across the tundra and watching for caribou, moose and bears are what Denali is about.

June to August has the most services and the longest days.

Book Denali buses and park lodging early.

Practical notes: The visitor season is short. Kenai Fjords cruises run from about early May to late September, and Denali's buses run from late May to mid-September. Carry layers and rain gear, as the weather changes fast, and follow park guidance on bear safety.
