A UNESCO capital & Atlantic surf Best season (general guide): Dec–May

Barbados, the most easterly of the Caribbean islands, combines calm west-coast beaches, a wild Atlantic east coast and a historic capital. This route spends six nights on the island, so one base near Bridgetown or the south coast works well. From Hong Kong you'll connect via London or a US hub to Grantley Adams International Airport, the country's only port of entry by air, about 13 kilometres from the centre of Bridgetown.

How to pace it: arrive and settle in on the south coast, then give day two to Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, listed by UNESCO in 2011. There you can see the Parliament, one of the oldest in the Commonwealth (1639), the Barbados Museum in a former military prison, and the house where George Washington stayed in 1751, his only journey outside North America. On day three, ride the tram through Harrison's Cave in the centre of the island; Barbados is a coral island, which explains its limestone caves.

Day four is for the east coast, where Bathsheba's huge rock formations stand in the Atlantic surf, and day five for Hunte's Gardens, a tropical garden in a sinkhole in the hills. Finish on a Friday if you can, with the fish fry at Oistins on the south coast.

Practical notes: December to May is the dry season. Cars drive on the left. Order flying fish and cou-cou, cornmeal with okra and the national dish, and if you like rum, Mount Gay dates its records back to 1703. Cricket fans can visit Kensington Oval, which hosted the 2007 World Cup final. Crop Over, the summer festival, began as a celebration of the end of the cane harvest.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Barbados to take normal security precautions (updated 9 Jul 2026), and the US rates it Level 1 (10 Apr 2026).
