Baroque churches & an island of mangoes Best season (general guide): Dec–May

The Western Visayas, in the middle of the Philippines, are known for their food, festivals and old churches. This route spends three nights in Iloilo and three on the mango island of Guimaras. From Hong Kong you'll connect through Manila or Cebu to Iloilo.

How to pace it: Iloilo City, on Panay's south-east coast and the most populous city in the region, grew from former towns that are still its districts, each with its own plaza and church. On arrival, walk the old Calle Real. Day two is for Jaro Cathedral, whose bell tower stands across the road, and Molo Church, known for its statues of female saints; eat La Paz batchoy, the pork noodle soup created in the La Paz district. On day three, drive south to Miagao Church, whose carved façade shows a coconut tree, one of the baroque churches of the Philippines listed by UNESCO.

Then take a small boat across to Guimaras, an island province in the Panay Gulf whose crossing takes about 15 minutes. Give day five to the mango farms, as its mangoes are said to be among the sweetest in the world, and day six to the island's beaches.

Practical notes: December to May is the drier season; typhoons are most likely from June to November. Dinagyang, held in January, is one of the country's biggest festivals, with street dancers in costume, so book early if your dates overlap.

Safety: the US rates the Philippines Level 2, with Level 4 'do not travel' for the Sulu archipelago and parts of Mindanao (1 Sep 2026), and Canada advises a high degree of caution, warning against travel to areas of Mindanao (updated 7 Jul 2026). Panay and Guimaras are not among them.
