Monet's cathedral & a harbour of slate-hung houses Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Normandy is close to Paris but feels a world away, with timber-framed towns and an estuary that drew the Impressionists. This route spends three nights in Rouen and three in Honfleur. From Hong Kong you'll fly to Paris, then take the train down the Seine.

How to pace it: Rouen, Normandy's prefecture, was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe. On day two, see the Gothic cathedral, painted by Claude Monet in a series showing the façade at different times of day; its nineteenth-century iron spire made it for a time the tallest building in the world. Walk under the Gros-Horloge, an astronomical clock set in an arch over a street. Day three is for Joan of Arc, tried and burned in Rouen in 1431; a modern church stands on the Old Market square where she died. Gustave Flaubert, author of Madame Bovary, was born in the city.

On day four, take the bus to Honfleur, on the south bank of the Seine estuary across from Le Havre. Its old port is lined with tall slate-fronted houses, and Sainte-Catherine is the largest wooden church in France, built by shipwrights. Day five is for the Eugène Boudin museum, named after the painter born here; Courbet, Boudin and Monet all worked in the town, and the composer Erik Satie was also born here. Keep day six for a coast walk.

Practical notes: May to September is the most reliable season for the coast. Calvados, the apple brandy with its own protected name, is the drink to try.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to France to take a high degree of caution (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates France Level 2 (28 May 2025).
