The home of golf & a castle above the battlefields Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Between Edinburgh and the Highlands, two small Scottish towns tell the story of the country's learning, sport and wars. This route spends three nights in St Andrews and three in Stirling. From Hong Kong you'll connect through a hub to Edinburgh, then take the train to Leuchars, the nearest station to St Andrews, and a bus.

How to pace it: St Andrews, on the Fife coast about 50 kilometres north-east of Edinburgh, is home to Scotland's oldest university, founded in the fifteenth century. On day two, explore the cathedral ruins on the cliffs, once the largest church in Scotland, and the ruined castle with its bottle dungeon and medieval siege tunnel. Day three is for the Old Course, one of the oldest golf courses in the world, and West Sands; the course is public, and on Sundays it is usually closed to golfers and open to walkers. You'll find the town, named after Saint Andrew the Apostle, easy to walk.

On day four, take the train to Stirling, on the River Forth at its lowest bridging point, which made it strategic for centuries. See Stirling Castle on its volcanic crag, a favourite residence of the Stuarts, where Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned. Day five is for the National Wallace Monument on the Abbey Craig, recalling William Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297, and day six for Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce won in 1314. Stirling lies 42 kilometres from Glasgow, so you can also continue west from it.

Practical notes: summer brings the longest days, though the weather can change quickly, so pack layers and a rain jacket.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to the UK to take a high degree of caution (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates the UK Level 2 (9 Sep 2026).
