Island city, dwarf statues & timber churches Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Lower Silesia, in south-west Poland, has a lively university city on the Oder and some remarkable churches built of wood. This route spends four nights in Wrocław and two in Świdnica. From Hong Kong you'll connect through a European or Gulf hub to Wrocław.

Its Market Square is one of the largest in Poland, with a Gothic town hall at its centre.

Hundreds of small bronze dwarfs are hidden around the city, and spotting them is a popular game. Ostrów Tumski, the oldest part of the city, is a quiet island of churches, lit by gas lamps in the evening.

The Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is a huge circular painting shown in its own building. The Centennial Hall, an early concrete building, is listed by UNESCO.

In Świdnica, the Church of Peace is one of two large timber churches built after the Thirty Years' War, listed by UNESCO with its twin in Jawor.

Książ Castle, nearby, is one of the largest castles in Poland, set on a wooded hill.

May to September is the warmest season.

Wrocław is a student city, with cafés and bars around the Market Square busy late into the night. Many sights are within walking distance of the centre, and trams cover the rest. Świdnica is small and quiet, so you can see the Church of Peace in a morning and spend the afternoon at Książ. Tours of the Church of Peace explain how it was built without stone or nails, so join one for the full story. A slow evening walk across the bridges to Ostrów Tumski is a good end to the trip.

Good to know: Trains link Wrocław with Świdnica, and buses or taxis reach Książ. Try pierogi in a milk bar for a quick lunch.

Safety: Canada's advice for Poland is to take normal security precautions (updated 9 September 2026).
