Andes to Caribbean Best season (general guide): May–Jul

Few itineraries span as much of the map as this one. It begins beside Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia and ends on the turquoise shore of the Yucatán, with Peru's coastal capital and the old Inca heartland in between. There is no quick way from Irkutsk to South America, so the first flight is really a journey of its own, crossing several time zones and usually changing planes more than once. Plan to arrive in Lima tired and give yourself time to recover. The itinerary spends two nights in Lima, three nights in Cusco, one night in Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) and four nights in Cancún.

The order follows the altitude. Lima sits at sea level, which makes it a gentle place to sleep off the long haul and eat well before going up into the mountains. Cusco comes next, high in the Andes, and the days there are best spent walking slowly through cobbled lanes while your body adjusts. Only then do you take the train down the Urubamba valley toward Machu Picchu, which lies lower than Cusco and feels easier on the lungs. The final hop to Cancún swaps thin mountain air for humid Caribbean warmth, so you finish the trip at the beach rather than starting it there.

For timing, May to July works best. That's when the Peruvian highlands are in their dry months, before the Caribbean storm risk rises in late summer. Pack for both extremes: warm layers for cold Andean nights and light clothes for Mexico. Book Machu Picchu entry and the train early, because both are limited and can sell out for popular dates.

Suggested outline

  1. Irkutsk

    Start

  2. Lima

By air · 2 nights suggested

Two nights here give you time to recover from a very long journey. The Miraflores and Barranco clifftop districts are pleasant places for a first walk along the ocean.

  3. Cusco

By air · 3 nights suggested

At roughly 3,400 metres, Cusco rewards a slow first afternoon. Save the steeper streets of San Blas and the nearby ruins for the second and third days.

  4. Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes)

    Overland · 1 night suggested

Staying one night in Aguas Calientes lets you catch an early bus up to the citadel, before the day-trippers arrive from Cusco.

  5. Cancún

By air · 4 nights suggested

Four nights to unwind. Beyond the hotel strip, the area is a starting point for swimming in cenotes and visiting Maya sites inland.
