Istanbul to northern Catalonia: Girona and Figueres
Istanbul → Girona → Figueres
A walled riverside city & Dalí's theatre-museum Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct
North of Barcelona, Catalonia's old city of Girona and the home town of Salvador Dalí make a compact pair. This route spends four nights in Girona and two in Figueres. From Istanbul you'll connect to Girona airport or to Barcelona, then take the train. Girona stands where four rivers meet, including the Onyar, whose banks are lined with brightly painted houses. Much of its old quarter has been preserved, which makes it a popular destination.
How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Girona: day one, the river houses; day two, cathedral and the walls; day three, the Jewish quarter; day four, day on the coast. Then spend days five and six in Figueres: day five, train to Figueres, then Dalí museum; day six, Sant Ferran Castle.
Girona's cathedral has one of the widest Gothic naves in the world. The Call, Girona's medieval Jewish quarter, is one of the best preserved in Europe, with narrow, stepped lanes. The old town was used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones. A walk along the city walls gives views over the roofs to the Pyrenees.
Figueres, the capital of Alt Empordà, is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. The Dalí Theatre-Museum, which he designed himself in a former theatre, draws many visitors, and the artist is buried in its crypt.
To the east, the Cap de Creus natural park covers the rocky peninsula where Dalí had his house at Portlligat. Spring and autumn are mild and less crowded than summer. It is the capital of the province of Girona and of the comarca of Gironès. The Arab Baths, a Romanesque bathhouse from the twelfth century, are open to visitors. Figueres was also the birthplace of the singer Mónica Naranjo. Fast and regional trains link Girona and Figueres in a short ride.
Safety: Canada's advice for Spain is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 13 Aug 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
