A Danube capital & Alpine-style peaks Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Slovakia is a small country with a relaxed capital on the Danube and the highest mountains in the Carpathians. This route spends two nights in Bratislava and four in the High Tatras. From Johannesburg you'll connect through a European hub to Bratislava or nearby Vienna. Bratislava's old town is compact and walkable, with St Martin's Cathedral, where Hungarian kings were crowned, and Bratislava Castle on a hill above the river.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Bratislava: day one, the old town; day two, Bratislava Castle and Devín. Then spend days three to six in High Tatras: day three, train to Poprad; day four, Štrbské Pleso lake; day five, cable car to Lomnický štít; day six, Spiš Castle.

The Most SNP bridge has a restaurant shaped like a UFO on top of its tower. Devín Castle, a ruin west of the city, overlooks the meeting of the Danube and Morava rivers. The High Tatras, in the north, are a small, sharp mountain range of granite peaks and glacial lakes, protected as a national park.

Štrbské Pleso is a lake resort with trails around the water. A cable car climbs to Lomnický štít, one of the highest peaks. East of the mountains, Spiš Castle is one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe, listed by UNESCO with the town of Levoča. June to September is the hiking season.

Good to know: Trains link Bratislava and Poprad. A narrow-gauge electric railway connects the mountain resorts. Some high trails close in winter and spring.

Bratislava's old town is small, so one full day covers the castle, the cathedral and the riverside. The train from Bratislava to Poprad crosses the country in a few hours, with views of hills and valleys along the way. In the Tatras, mountain huts serve hot meals to hikers, but check opening times outside summer. Trail closures apply in some seasons, so check the national park notices before setting off.

Bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep's cheese, is the national dish.

Safety: Canada's advice for Slovakia is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 August 2026), and the US rates Slovakia Level 1 (12 Feb 2026).
