A silver town & a square of painted gables Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Away from Prague, the Czech countryside holds two small UNESCO-listed towns that are easy to combine. This route spends three nights in Kutná Hora and three in Telč. From Johannesburg you'll connect through a hub to Prague, an hour by train from Kutná Hora.

How to pace it: Kutná Hora, a town of about 22,000 people in Central Bohemia, grew rich on silver mining in the Middle Ages, and its centre was listed with Sedlec by UNESCO in 1995. On day two, visit the Church of St Barbara, built by the miners and one of the great Gothic churches of Central Europe, the Italian Court, the royal mint where silver Prague groschen were struck, and the Gothic Stone House museum on the square. Give day three to the Sedlec Ossuary in the suburbs, a chapel decorated with human bones, including a chandelier.

On day four, travel by road to Telč, a town of about 5,100 people in the Vysočina Region, in hilly country surrounded by fishponds. Its long square, also a UNESCO site, is lined with arcaded houses with painted Renaissance and baroque gables, so arrive in time to see it in the evening light. Day five is for the castle at the end of the square, rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the sixteenth century and now a national cultural monument, and day six for a walk around the ponds.

Practical notes: late spring to early autumn is the most pleasant time to walk the towns. Trains connect Prague and Kutná Hora, and buses serve Telč, so you can do the trip without a car.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Czechia to take normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Czechia Level 1 (8 Jan 2026).
