Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island, was founded by Scottish settlers, and its name comes from the Gaelic for Edinburgh. Just beyond it, the Otago Peninsula is one of the country's best places for wildlife. This route spends three nights in Dunedin and three on the peninsula. From Kuala Lumpur you'll connect via Auckland or an Australian hub to Dunedin.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Dunedin: day one, the Octagon; day two, railway station and Baldwin Street; day three, Tunnel Beach walk. Then spend days four to six on the Otago Peninsula: day four, drive out along the harbour; day five, albatross colony at Taiaroa Head; day six, Larnach Castle and penguin viewing.

The city centre is built around the Octagon, an eight-sided plaza, with stone churches and Victorian buildings nearby. Dunedin's railway station, with its ornate stone façade, is one of the most photographed buildings in the country. Baldwin Street, in the northern suburbs, has been listed as the steepest residential street in the world. Tunnel Beach, south of the city, is reached by a path through a hand-cut tunnel in the sandstone cliffs.

The Otago Peninsula stretches along the harbour. At Taiaroa Head on its tip, the Royal Albatross Centre overlooks the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross. The rare yellow-eyed penguin nests on beaches on the peninsula, and guided tours visit hides where the birds come ashore. Larnach Castle, a Victorian mansion with gardens, stands on a ridge above the harbour.

November to March is the warm season; the weather changes quickly at any time of year. Three nights in the city leave time for its museums, cafés and the botanic garden, while the peninsula is best for slow days of walks, wildlife and coastal views. Bring layers and a windproof jacket; the southerly wind can be cold even in summer.

Dunedin's University of Otago, founded in 1869, is New Zealand's oldest university. Blue cod and Bluff oysters, from the far south, feature on local menus. Dunedin was founded in 1848.
