Freshwater lake & cichlid fish Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Lake Malawi stretches along most of Malawi's eastern border, a huge freshwater lake with sandy beaches and clear water. This route spends one night in Lilongwe and five at Cape Maclear. From Lagos you'll connect through Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Johannesburg to Lilongwe. Lilongwe is a spread-out capital with markets and a nature sanctuary, a convenient overnight stop before the drive to the lake.

How to pace it: Spend day one in Lilongwe: arrive and settle in. Then spend days two to six in Cape Maclear (Lake Malawi): day two, drive to Cape Maclear; day three, snorkel with cichlids; day four, kayak to the islands; day five, village and lakeshore walk; day six, sunset dhow trip.

Cape Maclear lies within Lake Malawi National Park, listed by UNESCO for its hundreds of species of cichlid fish, most found nowhere else. Snorkelling from the beach or a boat reveals fish in bright blues and yellows. Kayaking trips go to islands in the park, such as Mumbo Island, where you can camp or stay in simple lodges. Fish eagles nest on the rocky shores.

The village of Chembe has guesthouses, small restaurants and fishing boats on the beach. Malawi is often called 'the warm heart of Africa' for its friendly people. May to October is the dry season and the best time. Cape Maclear is a place to slow down, so plan for unhurried days of snorkelling, kayaking and sitting by the lake. Lodges can arrange boat trips and guides. Evenings by the water, with fishing boats returning, are a highlight of the trip.

Bring a light fleece for cool dry-season evenings.

Good to know: The road from Lilongwe to the lake takes several hours, so travel by day. Bilharzia can occur in parts of the lake, so ask locally about where to swim and consider testing after your trip. Bring cash, as card machines are limited.

Fresh chambo, a fish from the lake, often appears on lodge menus, so ask about the day's catch.
