Amalfi & ruins Best season (general guide): May–Sep

The Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast bring together ancient ruins, Italy's most dramatic coastline and a famous island, all within a short distance of each other. From Lagos you'll connect via a European hub to Naples. From there, trains, buses and boats do all the work, so a car isn't needed.

Naples is the start, with its archaeological museum, underground tunnels and lively street life, and it is said to be the home of pizza. A train ride takes you to Pompeii, where streets, houses and frescoes were preserved under volcanic ash. Mount Vesuvius can be climbed nearby. The road and boats continue to the Amalfi Coast: pastel Positano down its cliff, Amalfi's cathedral and the gardens of Ravello high above the sea. The Path of the Gods is a scenic walk between villages. Ferries then cross to Capri, where boat trips circle the island and visit the Blue Grotto when the sea allows.

Ferries along the coast and to Capri run mainly from about April to October, with fewer sailings at the start and end. May and September tend to offer the best balance of weather and crowds. July and August are very busy.

Book accommodation early on the coast, as space is limited. The Blue Grotto closes when the sea is rough, so plan a flexible day for Capri.
