A riverside town, pepper farms & seaside crab Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr

Cambodia's small southern coast is a slower, quieter world from the temples of the north. This route spends three nights in Kampot and three in Kep. From London you'll connect via a hub to Phnom Penh, then transfer south by road. Kampot sits on a river under the Elephant Mountains, with fading colonial shophouses and sunset boat trips.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kampot: day one, drive from Phnom Penh; day two, riverside and old town; day three, Bokor Mountain. Then spend days four to six in Kep: day four, drive to Kep, then pepper farm; day five, crab market; day six, boat to Rabbit Island.

Bokor Mountain, above the town, has the remains of a French hill station in a national park. The area is famous for Kampot pepper, which has protected geographical indication status, and farms welcome visitors. Kep, a former seaside resort, is known for its seafood, especially crab. Boats run from Kep to Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, for a quiet beach day.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Cambodia, with regional advisories for the Thai border and landmine areas (updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Cambodia Level 2 and says do not travel to areas along the Thai border (issued 15 Sep 2026). This route stays on the south coast, far from that border; stay on marked paths in rural areas.

Kep was founded as a seaside resort for the French elite in the early twentieth century, and the ruins of its modernist villas still stand among new buildings. The Bokor Hill Station was built by the French in the 1920s, and its abandoned Catholic church and old casino were landmarks for decades.

Fish amok, a curry steamed in banana leaves, is Cambodia's best-known dish.
