London to the Leeward Islands: St Kitts and Nevis
London → St Kitts → Nevis
A mountain fortress & a quiet island of plantation inns Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr
St Kitts and Nevis, in the Leeward Islands, form one of the smallest countries in the Americas, with forested volcanoes and colonial history. This route spends three nights on St Kitts and three on Nevis. From London you'll fly to St Kitts. St Kitts, also known as St Christopher, faces the Caribbean Sea on its west side and the Atlantic on its east.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three on St Kitts: day one, Basseterre; day two, Brimstone Hill Fortress; day three, scenic railway round the island. Then spend days four to six on Nevis: day four, ferry to Charlestown; day five, Hamilton's birthplace; day six, Nevis Peak and the plantation inns.
With neighbouring Nevis it forms the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The two islands are separated by a shallow channel about three kilometres wide, known as The Narrows. Brimstone Hill Fortress, on a volcanic hill above the west coast, was built by the British and is listed by UNESCO as a well-preserved example of military architecture.
The St Kitts Scenic Railway runs on the narrow-gauge track built to carry sugar cane around the island. Basseterre, the capital, has a small circus modelled on Piccadilly Circus. Nevis lies about 350 kilometres east-south-east of Puerto Rico. Its area is 93 square kilometres, and its capital is Charlestown. Alexander Hamilton, one of the founders of the United States, was born in Charlestown, and a museum stands on the site of his birthplace.
Nevis Peak, the island's central volcano, is usually capped by cloud. Sugar was the islands' main industry for centuries, until the state-run industry closed in 2005, and several former plantations are now inns. Nevis forms part of the inner arc of the Leeward Islands and lies about 80 kilometres west of Antigua. Frances Nisbet, a young widow living on Nevis, married Horatio Nelson on the island in 1787. The drier months from December to April are the main season.
Safety: Canada's advice for Saint Kitts and Nevis is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Saint Kitts and Nevis Level 1 (7 Jul 2026).
