A lake town of farmers' markets & a ski village under Vermont's highest peak Best season (general guide): Jun–Oct, Jan–Mar

Northern Vermont is a small world of lakes, farms and mountains, at its most colourful in autumn and busiest in the ski season. This route spends three nights in Burlington and three in Stowe. From Madrid you'll connect through a US hub to Burlington, Vermont's largest city, about 153 kilometres south of Montreal.

How to pace it: arrive and walk Church Street Marketplace, the pedestrian street at the centre of town; Ben & Jerry's began in a former petrol station in Burlington in 1978. Day two is for the Lake Champlain waterfront; the lake stretches between Vermont, New York and Quebec and was named after Samuel de Champlain, who reached it in 1609. On day three, visit the Shelburne Museum south of the city, with its large folk-art collection and historic buildings, including a lake steamer. With about 45,000 people, Burlington is the least populous US city to be the largest in its state, and it is home to the University of Vermont.

On day four, drive to Stowe, nicknamed the Ski Capital of the East. Give day five to Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont, whose ridge is said to look like the profile of a face, and day six to Smugglers' Notch, a narrow pass with a winding road between huge boulders. The Trapp Family Lodge was founded by the family whose story inspired The Sound of Music.

Practical notes: summer and early autumn are mild, and winter brings snow for skiing at Stowe Mountain Resort on Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Vermont has long been the largest maple syrup producer in the United States, so look for it at farm stands.

Safety: this is a domestic US route with no State Department advisory; Canada asks travellers to the US to take normal security precautions (updated 10 Oct 2026).
