Granite beaches & a tiny capital Best season (general guide): Apr–May, Oct–Nov

Mahé is the largest island of the Seychelles, a ridge of granite peaks covered in forest and fringed by beaches. This route spends six nights on Mahé. From Madrid you'll connect via a Gulf hub to Mahé. Visit Victoria, the capital, one of the smallest in the world, with a silver clocktower and a market selling fish, spices and fruit.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Mahé: day one, Beau Vallon; day two, Victoria market and the clocktower; day three, Morne Seychellois trail; day four, Sainte Anne marine park; day five, south coast beaches; day six, tea plantation and viewpoints.

Morne Seychellois National Park covers the island's highest peaks, and trails climb through the forest to viewpoints. Practical notes: take a boat to the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, off the east coast, which protects reefs and small islands. Beaches such as Anse Intendance in the south are framed by granite boulders, while Beau Vallon in the north is a long sandy bay.

A tea plantation in the hills welcomes visitors. April, May, October and November, between the monsoons, are the calmest months.

The Seychelles has the world's only wild populations of the coco de mer, a palm with the largest seed of any plant, found on Praslin and Curieuse. Seychellois Creole is the most widely spoken language, alongside English and French.

The Seychelles' national bird, the black parrot, lives only on Praslin. Mahé is named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Île de France, now Mauritius, and the island holds around nine-tenths of the country's people. The island covers about 157 square kilometres.
