Madrid to Martinique
Madrid → Martinique
Volcanic peaks, Creole towns & rum Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr
Martinique is a French island in the Caribbean, with a volcano, rainforest and beaches. This route spends six nights on the island. From Madrid you'll connect via Paris to Fort-de-France. Fort-de-France, the capital, is on a wide bay, with markets and a fort. Saint-Pierre was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902; ruins remain in the town.
Mount Pelée, in the north, can be climbed on a steep trail. Rhum agricole, made from fresh cane juice, is produced at distilleries across the island. The Jardin de Balata, a botanical garden, has tropical plants and treetop walkways. The south has calm beaches such as Les Salines.
Driving is on the right, and a rental car is the easiest way to get around, though roads can be narrow and winding. In the north, the rainforest and volcano are cooler and wetter than the coast. For the Mount Pelée hike, start early, bring water and expect mud on the trail. Rum distilleries welcome visitors for tours and tastings, but arrange a driver if you plan to taste. In the south, beaches are calmer and good for swimming. Creole food mixes seafood, spices and tropical fruit.
Markets in Fort-de-France sell spices, fruit and local crafts, and are a lively place to spend a morning. Bring a bag for purchases and small change for snacks. Snorkelling is good off several southern beaches, with calm water most mornings.
Practical notes: December to April is the dry season. Martinique is part of France, so the euro is the currency, and French is the main language, with Creole widely spoken. The hurricane season runs from June to November, so check the forecast if travelling then. Martinique is part of the European Union as an outermost region but is not in the Schengen Area, and since 2021 its whole land and sea territory has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Safety: Canada's advice for Martinique is to take normal security precautions (updated 3 June 2026), and the US rates France Level 2 (28 May 2025).
