Tasmania wilderness Best season (general guide): Nov–Mar

Tasmania, the island state south of mainland Australia, has a large part of its area protected as wilderness, and this route combines its historic capital with one of its finest mountain parks. From Manila you'll connect via Sydney or Melbourne to Hobart, and a hire car takes you to Cradle Mountain.

Hobart's waterfront has old sandstone warehouses, and Saturday's Salamanca Market fills the square with crafts and produce. A ferry goes up the river to MONA, a private museum of contemporary and ancient art. The road to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington has views over the city. Heading north-west, Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The Dove Lake circuit is a classic walk under the peak, and wombats are often seen grazing at dawn and dusk. Experienced walkers can start the six-day Overland Track here.

The warmer months from about November to March are the best time for walking. The Overland Track's booking season runs from 1 October to 31 May, with a daily limit on walkers. Weather in the mountains can be cold and wet at any time.

Book Overland Track places as soon as they open. Pack layers and rain gear, and drive carefully at dusk when wildlife is on the roads.

How to pace it: three nights in Hobart allow for the Saturday market if your dates fit, a half day at MONA and a trip up kunanyi/Mount Wellington on a clear day. The drive to Cradle Mountain takes most of a day, and there are stops on the way in the central highlands. Three nights in the park let you walk the Dove Lake circuit on the clearest day and see wombats in the evening. The Overland Track is a separate six-day walk, so book it as a different trip if you want to do it.
