A smoking volcano at dawn & a crater lake with blue fire Best season (general guide): May–Oct

East Java's volcanoes are among the most dramatic sights in Indonesia, and two of them can be combined in a short trip. This route spends three nights near Mount Bromo and three near Ijen. From Melbourne you'll connect through Jakarta or Bali to Surabaya, then drive. Mount Bromo is an active volcano in the Tengger mountains.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three at Mount Bromo: day one, drive from Surabaya; day two, sunrise viewpoint and the crater; day three, Tengger villages. Then spend days four to six in Ijen: day four, road east to Ijen; day five, night hike for the blue fire; day six, rest in Banyuwangi.

Mount Bromo stands in a vast caldera floored with volcanic sand, inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Its name comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma. Visitors usually go before dawn to a viewpoint to watch the sunrise over Bromo and Semeru, then cross the sand to climb to the crater rim.

The Tengger people of the area are Hindu, and during the Yadnya Kasada festival they throw offerings into Bromo's crater. The Ijen volcano complex lies on the border between the regencies of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso. It is known for its blue fire, which comes from burning sulphur gas, for its acidic turquoise crater lake, and for the labour-intensive sulphur mining done by hand.

The dry season, from May to October, is the best time to visit. Both volcanoes are monitored, and access can be closed when activity rises.

Getting there and around: fly into Surabaya, go on to Mount Bromo overland, go on to Ijen by road, and return by road to Surabaya for the flight home.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Indonesia and to avoid non-essential travel to the provinces of Indonesian Papua (advisory updated 10 Sep 2026); the US rates Indonesia Level 2 (7 Jul 2026).
