An ancient port on the Atlantic & the home of sherry and flamenco Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

In the far south-west of Spain, the city of Cádiz and the sherry town of Jerez lie only a short train ride apart. This route spends three nights in Cádiz and three in Jerez. From Melbourne you'll connect through Madrid or another hub to Jerez airport, which sits between the two. Cádiz, on a narrow spit off the Atlantic coast, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Cádiz: day one, the old town; day two, cathedral and the Tavira tower; day three, beach day at La Caleta. Then spend days four to six in Jerez: day four, train to Jerez, then a sherry bodega; day five, Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art; day six, flamenco evening.

The golden dome of Cádiz's cathedral is a landmark on the sea front. Cádiz is separated from neighbouring San Fernando by a narrow isthmus, and Columbus sailed from here on his second and fourth voyages to the Americas. The Torre Tavira, a watchtower once used to watch for ships, has a camera obscura that projects live views of the city.

Cádiz's carnival is known for its satirical songs. Jerez de la Frontera, the most populous town in the province, lies on a plain crossed by the Guadalete river. Sherry takes its name from the town, and many bodegas offer tours and tastings. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art stages shows of dressage horses.

Jerez is also considered one of the cradles of flamenco. Spring and autumn are warm but not as hot as midsummer.

Jerez hosts the Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix at the Circuito de Jerez. Sherry is made only in the triangle formed by Jerez, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María. Fried fish, sold in paper cones, is a classic of Cádiz's seafront bars.

Safety: Canada's advice for Spain is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 13 Aug 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
