Gothic brick & the largest castle in the world Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Northern Poland is a land of red-brick Gothic towns and castles built by the Teutonic Knights. This route spends four nights in Toruń and two in Malbork. From Melbourne you'll connect via a European or Gulf hub to Gdańsk, then take the train. Toruń's medieval town, listed by UNESCO, was a member of the Hanseatic League and survived the Second World War largely intact.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Toruń: day one, train from Gdańsk; day two, old town and Copernicus; day three, gingerbread museum; day four, riverside walk. Then spend days five and six in Malbork: day five, train to Malbork; day six, castle tour.

The astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born here, and his family house is a museum. Toruń is famous for gingerbread, and a living museum shows how it is baked in carved moulds. UNESCO lists it, and its brick halls have been restored after wartime damage.

Audio-guided tours take several hours through courtyards, chapels and the Grand Master's palace. May to September is the best season. Toruń's old town hall is one of the largest Gothic town halls in Europe, and its tower can be climbed for views over the Vistula.

Gingerbread has been baked in Toruń since the Middle Ages, and the town's Living Museum of Gingerbread runs workshops where visitors make their own. Pierogi and hearty soups fill menus in the old town's cellar restaurants. The Teutonic Order began as a crusading order in the Holy Land and later ruled a state on the Baltic coast.

Getting there and around: fly into Gdańsk, go on to Toruń overland, go on to Malbork by train, and return by train to Gdańsk for the flight home.

Safety: Canada's advice for Poland is to exercise normal security precautions (updated 9 Sep 2026), and the US rates Poland Level 1 (5 Jun 2025).
