Lakes, orchards and wineries in a dry valley Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

British Columbia's Okanagan Valley is dry, sunny and covered in orchards and vineyards, a contrast to the rainy coast. This route spends three nights in Kelowna and three in Penticton. From Mexico City you'll connect through Vancouver or Calgary to Kelowna. Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the southern interior of British Columbia. Its name comes from an Okanagan word referring to a grizzly bear.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kelowna: day one, the waterfront; day two, wineries and orchards; day three, Myra Canyon trestles by bike. Then spend days four to six in Penticton: day four, road south to Penticton; day five, float the channel between the lakes; day six, Skaha bluffs and Naramata wineries.

Okanagan Lake is long and deep, and local legend tells of the Ogopogo, a lake monster. The Okanagan is British Columbia's main wine region, with many wineries open for tastings. Above Kelowna, Myra Canyon is crossed by wooden trestles of the old Kettle Valley Railway, now a cycling and walking trail.

Penticton sits between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake, in the south of the valley. In summer, people float on inner tubes down the channel that links the two lakes. The SS Sicamous, a sternwheeler that once carried passengers on the lake, is preserved on Penticton's beach. The Skaha Bluffs, above the town, are one of Canada's best-known rock-climbing areas.

Summer is hot and dry, the season for the lakes and fruit harvests. The Okanagan Rail Trail follows an old railway line north from Kelowna along the lakes. Kelowna's airport is one of the busiest in Canada for its size.

The Kettle Valley Railway was built in the early twentieth century across the mountains of southern British Columbia, and many of its sections are now trails.

Safety: the US rates Canada Level 1 (5 Jun 2026); for Canadians this is a domestic trip.
